After receiving a job offer from Wayne Westerberg, Chris works a Wayne's Grain elevator. Being a hard worker, people in Carthage take a liking to him, however once Wayne is sent to jail because of some illegal activities he was involved in, he was out of a job and left.

Chris sneaks into Mexico on a canoe and spends some time roaming. He gets lost here and there but with the help of others finds his way. At the end he sneaks back into the US by going through a dam's open spillgates.

After making it to Fairbanks with some hitchhiking help from Jim Gallien, he heads to the Stampede Trail where he will meet his end.

6 people arrived at the abandoned bus where Chris McCandless had been staying on the stampede trail. There was an SOS note on the door and a decayed stench coming from inside the bus. After some investigation, they found Chris' dead and emaciated body inside. The autopsy later said that he had been dead for two and a half weeks and that he had starved to death.
