The Steel Life

  • Early Life

    Early Life
When I was a small child remember that I was always crying. My name is Sean Alwood. I had 2 brothers and no sisters and we lived in Ireland. My family was not the richest, but we got through it just fine. Now I am 19 years old living by myself. I am thinking about making my journey to the United States to Ellis Island. I would want to become Head steel manufacturer in America. I want to live the life of a star. I always have dreamed big. (I hope inspiration is given to whoever reads my tale.)

    Arriving to Ellis
Finally I have arrived at Ellis Island. I am overwhelmed with the amount of people that are here. I knew there would be many people here trying to get into the golden mountain, but this is crazy. This must mean that this really is the promise land. I really think there is a good chance I could make it big here. I can’t wait to get done here and enter the United States. I want to become rich and be a huge rich manager like Andrew Carnegie.

    Exam Time
One thing I knew I would have to go through before I got into America was the physical exam at Ellis. I just hoped that I would pass. They checked me really quick. They had to because of all of the people. After that they asked me my name, occupation, and financial situation. Then they sent me on my way into the United States. I didn't even know where to start. I just had to trust my gut.

Getting Work in The Steel Industry
I had wanted to work alongside of Andrew Carnegie ever since I decided to come to the United States. I wanted to make it big. Now I am doing one of the most dangerous jobs in Chicago which is building sky scrapers. I knew that a lot of the workers here did not like Italian workers because we were willing to take less pay than other normal American workers. I really do hope that things will work out here for me. I risked everything to come here. I also h
  • The Riot

    The Riot
Things really started to heat up between the American workers that were here before us and the Italians in Chicago. They hated us because we were willing to help build skyscrapers for less pay than they were. They couldn't stand us! We were about to go up and work on the sky scrapers when we saw an angry mob of them coming. I ran away from it and escaped in the chaos. All of the workers that were fighting were fired. The ones that didn't kept their jobs including me. I was lucky....... this time
  • The Unjust Monopoly

    The Unjust Monopoly
By now Andrew Carnegie had all but created a monopoly in the steel industry. All of his competitors had been wiped out. He's made deals, sold his steel cheaper, and overall produced more. I am glad I was able to be one of his workers early on so that I can rise to the top even further. All my hard work has made me a boss in Chicago. I can't believe this. My next step will be to meet him in person!
