The compromise listed California would be a free states, the slave trade was abolished, the government would let territories is they wanted to be slave or free , and the Fugitive Slave Act. It did not work in the end & angered the Northerners.

Harreit Beecher Stowe was the author. It showed the bad things about slavery. The Northerners thought slavery was horrible & the South saw it as a Yankee Abolitionist Propaganda.

They were debating on if Kansas & Nebraska should be a slave or free. The government said the people could decide. So people came flooding to make them slave or free. The states became overpopulated.

Dred Scott was a man that sued for his freedom. The court ruled that since African Americans were not citizens he is not allowed to sue. Alot of the Northerners became Republicans.

John Brown seized the federal arsenal & killed four people. He wnted to start up a slave revolt in Virginia. It was unsuccessful, him & ten other men got executed.

South surrounded the North at Fort Sumter & attacked. North had to surrender. This was the begging of the Civil War.

Lincoln was running & he wanted to get rid of slavery. The South didn't want him to win. So once he did the South seceded from the Union & called themselfs the Confederate States of America.
