    In 1916, the Warlord period was a time of chaos and suffering and it is significant because it provided economic and cultural growth.     Fears that Japan might go back to barbarism were mollified by continuing cultivation of the arts. Zen Buddhism appealead to the warior elite and secured the place of arts in the era of strife and destruction.
