The Special Education Process

  • Child Find

    Child Find
    IDEA requires that each state identifies, locates, and evaluates all children with disabiities. There are multiple different activies conducted to find children who need special education and related services. Once this happens a parent is asked permission to evaluate the child. Child find requires participation of the school and parents and the time frame varries.
  • Disposition of Referral

    After Child Find a school professoional asks for a student to be evaluated to check for a disability. This may also come from a parent and can be verbal or written. This include the Child Find professional and Parents and the time frame is roughly a few weeks.
  • Evaluation

    The evaluation process is intended to decide if the child has a disability that requires special eduction or related services. The evaluation also finds out the students specific needs regarding to education and what is appropriate when addressing those needs. Evaluations are conducted with permission of the parents by the child find team. Evaluations must be completed within 45 school working days after a parent gives concent.
  • Evaluation Meeting with Eligibility Determination


    Professionals including teachers, special education teachers, administrators, PT, OT, and psychologists look at the child's evaluation results. They decide together if the child has a disabilities as what is defined by IDEA. Parents have the right to challenge the decision if they do not agree.
  • IEP

    IEP
    The IEP meeting is scheduled and parents are notified about what will happen in the meeting. The meeting is held and the child's needs are discussed. Before the public school system can provide special education services the parents must give concent. The IEP is then written.
  • Placement

    The student is placed as soon as possible after the evaluation is completed. This will happen imediately if possible. The timeline for placement is ASAP and parents and special educators are involved.
  • Period: to

    Progress Monitoring

    Progress is monitored and teachers are also given the opportunity to evaluate their instruction.
  • Reevaluation

    Students are revaluated for their disability every three years. Students with MR are reevaluated every two years.
