    The launch of Sputnik was a significant moment in scientific history but also a significant moment in the military history. At first the U.S. congradulated the Russians but once they learned that the satalite was launched through the military, they became anxious beacuse they no longer had acess to the design or orbital elements.

    Launch of Russian Satallite Sputnik 2
    Sputnik was the second satallite that the Russians launched. This satalite carried an expeirmental dog named Laika, she was a Samoyed Terrior. Laika was the first being to enter Earth's orbit.
  • Launch of Explorer 1

    Launch of Explorer 1
    The launch of the satallite Explorer 1 was the first successful launch of a satallite for the U.S. The project was originally set to launch in 1955 but it was rescheduled to launch in 1958. The scientific instruments that the satallite held were the cosmic ray detctor, and the micrometeorite detector. Explorer 1's launch marked the beginning of the U.S. Space Age.

    The probe Luna 1 can also be called Mechta. This probe was the first spacecraft to reach the moon. The purpose of this mission was to test the temperature and pressure inside the probe.

    The launching of Voskhod 1 was very important to the advancements of the space technology because it was the first multi-person crew to be launched into orbit. Sadly the trip was a short one because of the cramped spaces, sicknesses, and lack of experience of the crew members aboard.

    Voskhod 2 consisted of a two person crew; the people were Colonel Pavel Belyayev and Lt. Colonel Aleksey Leonov. During the orbit of the spacecraft, Aleksey Leonov exited the spacecraft and performed mankind's first "walk in space."

    The Apollo 8 spacecraft was the first to mission to successfully take humans to the moon and back. This was significant becasue it paved the way for the actual landing on the moon. In addition to reaching the moon, it was the first time that pictures of the Earth were taken from the prespective of deep space and the first time that the lunar surface had been broadcasted on live T.V.

    Apollo 11 was the first Lunar spacecraft to land on the moon. The purpose of this mission was to photograph the lunar terain. That day about 530 million people watch Neil Armstrong's televised image and heard him describe the event as "... one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"
