    The Missouri Compromise
    -The Missouri Compromise was an effort thought to get rid of the sectional and political rivalries, in which would admit slavery within a state. -Authored by Senator Jesse B. Thomas of Illinois. -Temporarily slowed down the debate of slavery between the North and South at the time.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    -Nat Turner's Rebellion, consisted of an event in which a man by the name of Nat Turner, went on a "rampage" of killing multiple White people that resided in Southhampton, Virginia. This event took place within August, 1831. -This event sparked a mass terror mostly within the South which resulted in the mass murder of innocent blacks. -Turner was captured on the 30th of October, Was sentenced to death by hanging on the 5th of November, and was finally executed on the 11th of November.

    The Compromise of 1850
    -Consisted of laws the admitted multiple states into the US, including California, Utah, and New Mexico and determing if each state would be free or slave-states, regarding popular sovereignty. -Was the last major involvment between the senators Henry Clay of Kentucky, Daniel Webster of MA, and John Calhoun of South Carolina regarding nation affairs. -One of the bills passed within the compromise, included a changed new version of the fugitive slave act.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    -Expanded the federal government in which, allowed the government to track down, and capture fugitive runaway slaves. -Denied Runaway slaves the right to jury trials. -People caught providing shelter or food for runaway slaves were sometimes issued up to 6 months of time in jail, and fines up to $1,000.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    -Uncle Tom's Cabin is a Novel written by Harriet Beacher Stowe, in which consisted, Anti-Slavery opinions. -Helped lay the foundation for the civil war, and in which many though to be the "final breaking point". -Gave many people insight into the lives of slaves, and is one of the main reasons why people regard this as the final breaking point for the civil war

    Bleeding Kansas consisted of a series of conflicts which involved mostly bloody conflicts between anti-slavery Free-staters and pro-slavery "Border ruffians", and was between 1854 and 1861.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    -The Kansas-Nebraska Act which was passed on May 30, 1854; allowed people within the territories of Kansas, and Nebraska to decide if their state would allow slavery or not. -Mandated popular sovereignty, allowing settlers to determine if their state would allow slavery within their borders. -The conflict that arose between pro and anti-slavery settlers within this time led to the event known as "Bleeding Kansas".

    Brooks attacks Sumner (The Caning)
    -Charles Sumner, a abolitionist from Massachusetts, and leader of the Republican party, talked poorly of the "Murderous Robbers from Missouri", and coherently about Preston Brooks' cousin, Senator Andrew Butler. -Two days after talking poorly about Andrew Butler, Preston Brooks went to Charles Sumner, and repeatedly beat him over the head with a cane. -Charles sumner was beat so hard by the cane , that it reportedly broke in half.
  • Lincoln Douglas debates

    Lincoln Douglas debates
    -First off, it is perceived that these discussions were in fact debates; however it is true that one person would talk on end for up to 1 hour at a time. (not really a debate). -The discussions were not for the reason of ending slavery, but rather stoppin the spread of it. -The two men at the time were not actually running for president; however for the seat of senate that Douglas was in position of at the time.
  • (John Browns) Raid on Harpers Ferry

    (John Browns) Raid on Harpers Ferry
    -John Brown led a group of armed abilitionists on an assualt to capture and raid a military arsenal in Harpers Ferry, VA. -The event was the first in many steps of a plan to free slaves within parts of the south, and to kill white slave owners. -Brown intentions were thought to be postive; although the way he acted and planned were not. He was seen as crazy by some, and hero by some also; however in the end he made things worse rather than better.

    -The candidates of the election included Abraham lincoln of the Republican, John C. Beckenridge of the Sothern Democratics, Stephen A. Douglas of the Democratic, and finally John Bell of the Constitutional Union -The Republican Convention was held in Chicago of May 16th-18th, and was largely opposed to the extension of slavery -Due to the event following the Dred Scott Case of 1857, and the supreme court "voiding" the Missouri Compromise, it was intent that slavery was legal throughout the US
  • The Dred Scott Cases / Decision

    The Dred Scott Cases / Decision
    -Dred Scott (A Black slave) was said to be owned by someone who died, and was therefore sold over to another owner, Dr, John Emerson; which thereforth brings him to free territory. -After John Emerson dies, Dred scott and his family try to buy their freedom from the Doctors widow, she however refuses. -After failing to buy their freedom again, he decides to go the legal way of filing freedom to the St. Louis County court; however fails doing so; although during the second trial he succeeds.
