    The goal of the tariff was to protect industry in the northern United States from having to compete with European goods by increasing the prices of European products because imported goods were much cheaper than the ones that were made in the U.S. This made the U.S. to put a tax on imported goods. Because Americans were buying imported goods, people were going out of business. All of the money was going out, but none was coming in.

    The Dred Scott Case made it clear that with Southern Judges on the Supreme Court the issue of Slavery would never be settled and that any final solution for the Slavery Issue would have to come at the hands of the people. The Southern dominated Supreme Court ruled in Dred Scott that N^groes were mere property, less than human, and had no rights, quite obviouslly the Supreme Court failed

At stake during this election was the policy of slavery -- Southerners wanted the slave codes to be preserved whereas Northerners hoped to contain it.
