    The First U.S Program To Get To The Moon Was Project Mercury. The Goal Of It Was To Orbit A Piloted Spacecraft Around The Earth And Have It Return Safely. Project Mercury Costed 1.73 Billion Dollars In Today's Current Prices. Project Mercury Was Actually Established October 7 1958 However The First Flight Didn't Happen Till 1961. On May 5, 1961 Alan B. Shepard Was The First United States Citizen To Be In Space NOT TO LAND ON THE MOON!
