Project Gemini was the first step in reaching the moon, before Project Mercury only got people into space. The first flight was April 8, 1964 which was an unmanned test flight. Along with the two space programs Gemini and Mercury robotic probes were sent to the Moon they proved that a spacecraft could go to the Moon."In 1966, Surveyor landed gently on the Moon's surface, indicating that the Moon's surface could support spacecraft and humans." The first flight of Apollo was on Jan 27, 1967 however a tragedy accrued and astronauts Virgil Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee died when a fire swept through the command module. Project Apollo was the last program for the United States to reach the Moon. There was a total of 12 Apollo Missions. -
