  • The Wilmot Proviso

    This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. This bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the senate thus causing a division in congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the free soil party
  • The Compromise of 1850

    This compromise had the North and the south in its favor. To please the North it would make California a free state. To please the South it would allow slaveruy in the territory gained from Mexico and pass better laws to help slave owners get back their runaway slaves back
  • Kansas/ Nebraska Act

    This act, if passed, would get rid of the Missouri Compromise. Tis was passed using popular soveringhty. When passed it made Kansas a battleground for slavery.
  • bleeding Kansas

    This confilct happened because the proslavery people really wanted to make sure the Kansas/NEbraska act was passed. A few thousand proslavery voters came to vote illegally. Five people were killed and the act was passed
  • The Caning of Sumner

    This happened because of a speech that sumner said that had attacked proslavery faces in Kansas. Preston Brooks attacked Sumner in the senate with a wooden cane. MAny southerners had cheered Brooks on in the defense of the south.
  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott was a slave that was taken to a free state but then was brought back to hte south. He claimed he was a free man so he sued for freedom. In court the Chief Justice ruled that sice Scott was a "slave" he was not a U.S. citizen and was bound by the Missouri slave code. The result of his case was that African Americans could not be U.S. citizens and that slavery was allowed to sperad to all U.S. territoies.
  • Attack on HArpers Ferry

    THis attack resulted in many deaths, one being John Brown, the leader of the raid.Brown tried to attack the U.S. arsenal and stela its weapons.In the act, brown and several other men killed 4 peole befor being caught by the U.S. Marines. BRown was tried in court and hung.
  • The Election of 1860

    This election was mainly between Lincoln and Breckenridge along with a few other canidates. Southerners did not want Lincoln to win the election in fear that he would abolish slavery. So when Lincoln did win the election, the south seceded. Lincoln did not even abolish salvery.
