    This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party.

    The Compromise of 1850 were a series of Congressional laws intended to settle major conflict between free states and slave states. A Senator Henry Clay lead the compromise. To please the North, California would be admitted as a free state, and the slave trade would be banned in Washington D.C. To please the South, Congress would not pass laws regarding slavery for the rest of the terrirories won from Mexico, and Congress would pass a stronger law to help slaveholders recapture runaway slave.

    This when Preston Brooks beat Charles Sumner in the head with a cane. Sumner's condition was critical. The reason Brooks beat Sumner was because he was talking bad about A.P. Butler, one of Brook's South Carolina kinsman.

    This was when a slave from Missouri sued for his freedom. He did this because his owner took him yo live in territories where slavery was illegal. He sued for his freedom because he argued that he was a free man because he lived in places were slavey was illegal. Roger B. Taney argued that he couldnt sue against U.S. courts because he wasnt a U.S. citizen, so Dred Scott lost the case.

    Attacks on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown planned to capture the weapons in the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. He wanted to inspire the slaves to fight for there freedom. 18 followers, 13 whites, and 5 blacks captured Harpers Ferry arsenal. They killed four people. Brown sent out the word to rally and arm local slaves. No slaves joined the fight. The U.S. Marines attacked Brown at Harpers Ferry. Brown was convicted for murder and treason. He was sentenced for him to be hung
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    This was election in which Lincoln and Breckinridge were debating. Lincoln opposed the expansion of slavery into the territories. Breckinridge wanted the Federal government to protect slavery in any territory. The result was that the Abraham Lincoln won the election.
