    The bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was deafeatede in the Senate thus causing a division in congress. Although, not a sucess it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party.

  • Compromise of 1850

    A series of laws to settle the important disapprovals between free and slave states. It also avoided secession and avoided conflict for four years. The compromise of 1850 overturned the Missouri compromise and left the overall issue of slavery unsettled.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This was a law that established territories in the state of Kansas and Nebraska to give or allow their residents a choice to decide to allow slavery. After months of debate,the Nebraka-kansas Act passed on May 30, 1854.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    A proslavery mob attacked Lawrence, Kansas. The mob ruined offices. This was known as the Sak of Lawrence. With this extreme scene a man John Brown and about seven other men murdered five people from the proslavery mob. This was called ''Bleeding Kansas.''
  • Caning of Sumner

    A man named Senator Charles Sumner of Massachutes was attacked by A.P. Butler a senator from South Carolina. Sumner insulted Bulter so Butler hit Sumner with a cane on his head. Sumner tried to defend himself but couldnt because he was sitting down and his legs were trapped under his desk.
  • Dred Scott vs. Sandford

    Dred Scott was a slave who had an owner who was very nice to him. Scott and his owner went to a free state. they went back home to a non free state. Scott's owner later died. Scott sued for his freedom becausenhe was taken into territories where slavery was indeed illegal, later the court ruled against Dred Scott.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    On October 16,1859 John Brown with 18 followers killed four people while they captured the Harpers Ferry arsenal. On the morning of October 19 the soliders overran John Brown and his followers. Ten of his men were killed, including two of Brown's sons.
  • Election of 1860

    The election of 1860 was based on two diffret races for presidency. One in the South and the other in the North. Lincoln defeated Douglas in the North. Since the population in the North was greater, Lincoln won the election of 1860.
