    This bill claimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party.

  • Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 was a series of congressional laws. It was intended to settle the major disagreements between free states and slave states. After it was passed, California would become a free state.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    In January 1854, Senator Stephan Douglas introduced a bill that divided the land west of Missouri into two territories, Kansas and Nebraska. Antislavery supporters were outraged because slavery would have been outlawed in both territories. It was a law that ws established in 1854 and it mafe the territories of Kansas and Nebraska give their resident's to the right to decide to allow slavery.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Proslavery anf Antislavery supporters came to the Kansas Territory. They came so they could vote for the territorial legislature. Later, a proslavery mob attacked a town in Kansas because they were infuriated at the Antislavery supporters.
  • Caning of Sumner

    Senator Charles Sumner was a very strong abolitionist, against slavery. In Massachusetts, Charles Sumner delivered a speech in which attack and insulted the Proslavery suppporters. He insulted a Senator from North Carolina anf Preston Brooks, a relative of the Senator, heard this and assaulted Sumner while he was in his office and Preston Brooks beat him with a cane until it broke.

    The Dred Scott vs Stanford arguement was an 1856 Supreme Court case in which a slave such as Dred Scott, is sued for his freedom, This is because he had been taken to live in the territories, In the territories, slavery was illegal, The court ruled against Dred Scott.
  • Attack on Harper's Ferry

    John Brown thought he could inspire slaves to fight. He decided to go and steal the weapons int he US arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. When they got there, they were caught. John Brown told the slaves to fight back but they didn't. So they were all captured by US marines.
  • Election of 1860

    The election turned into two different races for presidency.. One in the North and one in the South. Lincoln and Douglas were the only cantidates. At the end Lincoln won the election and became President of the United States.
