This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a divison in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party.

California could not gain statehood, however with out the aproval of the Congress, taking the lead was Henry Clay. By the end of the September, Douglas succeeded, and the compromise became a law.

John Brown wanted slaves to fight for their freedom. Him, along with eighteen followers captured the Harpers Ferry Arsenal, killing four peoplein the raid. Brown and six other men got captured. Brown was sendenced to hang.
