The bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories tken from mexico. The bill passed the House of Representatives but was defeted in the senate thus causing a division in congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the free soil party. -

The Compromise is the debate between Congress and California.Congress broke apart because of this Compromise, the compromise was a problem because California could not gain statehood without approval. -
Kansas - Nebraska
In 1850 Stephan A. Douglas of Illinois drafted a bill to organize territorial goverments for the Nebraska Territory. He proposed that it should be divided in two territories. Nebraska and Kansas. If the bill passed, it would result in getting rid of the Missouri Compromise. It would allow people to vote for slavery in territories where the Missouri Compromise had banned it. -
"Bleeding Kansas"
Bleeding Kansas were Violent fights between pro-slavery groups and anti-slavery groups. This caused a lot of blood thus the name "Bleeding Kansas". This was the first violence leading to the civil war. -
