The French army invaded Portugal when they resisted the Continental System. Napoleon's army took a route through Spain to get to Portugal. After occupying Portugal they went back to Spain and the Peninsular War began, spanning 6 years.

After Alexander I withdrew from the Continental System, Napoleon prepared for a battle that he believed would end in a victory for him. However, the Russians used the Scorched Earth Policy against the French leaving Napoleon's army with very little supplies, forcing them to retreat.
