The Moon

  • The First Map of the Moon

The First Map of the Moon
Welcome to my space timeline about the Moon! I hope you enjoy it because I put a lot of effort into it. To start for my first event in 1645 Micheal Florent van Langren created the very first map of the Moon. Micheal was born April 27, 1598 and passed away on May 1675. Micheal Florent was also an astronomer and a cartographer.
  • Naming the Craters

    Naming the Craters
In the year 1651 Giovanni Battista Riccioli decided to start naming craters after philosophers and astronomers.Giovanni was born on April 17 1598 and passed away on June 25 1617. He also named some craters after time periods as well.
  • No Atmosphere

    No Atmosphere
In the year 1753 Roger Joseph Boscovich who was a Physicist discovered that the moon had no atmosphere. Roger was born on May 18, 1711 in Dubrovnik, Croatia and sadly had passed away on February 13, 1787 in Milan, Italy. Roger was also a geometer, astronomer, and a philosopher.
  • Where They From Meteor Strikes?

    Where They From Meteor Strikes?
In 1824 Franz von Gruithuisen thought that the craters on the moon were formed by meteor strikes. Franz (I'll just call him that) was a Physician and a astronomer who was born on March 19, 1774 in Burgruine Haltenberg, Scheuring, Germany. Sadly he passed away on June 21, 1852. He also taught medial students before becoming a professor of astronomy at the University of Munich in 1826.
  • Sending the Rockets

    Sending the Rockets
Robber Goddard was the first man to make the world's first liquid fuel rocket that successfully launched. Robbert was an American engineer, professor, physicist, and an inventor. Robbert was born on October 5, 1882 and died on August 10, 1945. Robbert had many rewards that he earned and here are some of them, he earned a congressional gold metal, a Langley gold metal, and a Daniel Guggenheim medal.
  • The First Lunar Close-up

    The First Lunar Close-up
On 1964 NASA's Ranger 7 actually produced the first TV close-up photos of the Lunar surface. It was finally launched on July 28, 1964 10:50 a.m. and costed 170 million USD. Also did you know that the F-channel began its one minute warm up 18 minutes before impact.
  • Luna 9

    Luna 9
On 1966 The Soviet spacecraft Luna 9 made it's very first soft landing on the moon. On February 3 (oh! that's my birthday!) 1966 the Luna 9 spacecraft became the very first spacecraft to achieve a survivable landing on the celestial body. The Luna 9's period was at least 15 days! Also it's landing mass was 99 kg. The launch date was January 31, 1966 while its last contact was on February 6, 1966.
  • The Lunar Orbiter

    The Lunar Orbiter
In the year 1967 NASA's Lunar Orbiter mission completed photographic mapping of the Moon. The lunar orbiter period was about 2 hours and it's orbit height was 50 km.
  • Apollo 8

    Apollo 8
In 1969 Apollo 8 made the first manned flight to the Moon and circled it 10 times before returning back to Earth. The members of the Apollo 8 were Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, William Anders, and Eugene Cernan. It was launched on December 21, 1968 and landed back on December 27, 1968.
  • Apollo 17

    Apollo 17
In 1972 Apollo 17 was known to make the last manned flight of the Apollo program. Apollo 17 was launched on December 7, 1972 and was returned on December 14, 1972. A fun fact about Apollo 17 is that it discovered orange soil that turned out to be made from tiny beads of volcanic glass.
  • Conclusion

So now that I have finished my space timeline about the moon, I hope while your were reading this you did learn a few new things about the Moon as well. In total I have spoken about 5 people who helped space exploration and 5 robots that helped as well. Thank you for reading and i hope there were a few new things that you learned.
