The Major Events of WWI

  • Archduke Franz and Sophie Ferdinand are assasinated.

    The archduke had been the heir to the Hungarian throne. Due to the assassin being Serbian, this led to Austria going to war with Serbia after they refused to abide to all of the demands Austria made.
  • Austria declares war on Serbia.

    Because of the heir's assassination, Austria is set on battling Serbia, triggering Serbia's ally, Russia, to join in.
  • Battle Lines are Drawn between Central and Allied Powers

    The battle then begins with the Western Front.
  • Development of the Eastern Front.

    In the east, Russian forces invade Germany.
  • The First Major Clash of the Western Front

    The Allies attacked the Germans northeast of Paris, in the valley
    of the Marne River.
  • Battle for Gallipoli

    The British begin a naval attack to capture the Gallipoli peninsula.
  • Germans launches a massiveattack against the French near Verdun

    Each side was taking advantage of new tools of war; all this new technology did was kill huge numbers of people more effectively
  • British forces attacked the Germans northwest of Verdun

    In an effort to relieve pressure on the French, the British Army attack the Germans, having over half a million casualites on each side.
  • Unrestricted submarine warfare is formed

    Germany announces that any ships around Britain will be sinked without warning.
  • United States Joins the Allies

  • Development of the Eastern Front

    Communist leader Vladimir Ilyich Lenin seizes power of Russia to end his country's involvement in the war.
  • Germany and Russia sign the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

    This ends the war between them.
  • Allies and Germans clashed at the Second Battle of the Marne

    The Allies succeed in beginning to overtake Germany. This leads to the Central powers beginning to crumble and the decline of the war.
  • End of World War I

    Kaiser Wilhelm and Marshal Foch sign an agreement to stop fighting.
  • The Treaty of Versailles between Germany and the Allied powers is signed

    The allied powers and central powers reach a compromise after four years of war and five years after the heir to the Hungarian throne was assasinated.
