  • Van Gogh's Birth

    Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30,1853 in Groot-Zundert, a village close to Breda in the province of North Brabant in the southern Netherlands. His parents were Theodorus van Gogh, a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, and Anna Cornelia Carbentus.

    From 1861, Van Gogh and his sister Anna were taught at home by a governess, until 1 October 1864, when he went to Jan Provily's boarding school at Zevenbergen about 20 miles away from his hometown.

    After his training, in June 1873, Goupil transferred him to London, where he lodged at 87 Hackford Road, Brixton, and worked at Messrs. Goupil & Co., 17 Southampton Street. This was a happy time for him. At this time, he was successful at work and at 20 years old.

    A rough patch

    Goupil dismissed Van Gogh in 1876, and that year he returned to England, worked at a small school at Ramsgate, and did some preaching. In early 1877 he clerked in a bookshop in Dordrecht; then he entered a religious seminary in Brussels. He left 3 months later to become an evangelist in a poor mining section of Belgium.Van Gogh had been helpful, but because his eccentricities alienated the miners, and he was dismissed in July 1879.   • Time in Etten

    April-December 1881: Van Gogh stayed with his parents, who were then in Etten, and continued to work at his art.     Van Gogh's friend and artist companion, Gauguin agrees to meet him in Arles. During November, they painted together. Their friendship began to deteriorate due to their contant arguing over art.

    Confrontation with Gaugin
    Van Gogh confronted Gauguin with a razor blade. Afraid of what would happen, Vincent fled their home and went to a brothel where he cut off the bottom part of his left ear and handed the severed tissue wrapped in newspaper to a prostitute.   • Admitted to Saint-Remy-de Provence Asylum

    Van Gogh asked to be interned in the asylum at Saint-Rémy-de Provence.
  • A year at Saint Remy

    A year at Saint Remy
    In the year he spent at the asylum Van Gogh worked as feverishly as at Arles and produced 150 paintings and hundreds of drawings. Included in these was his famous painting Starry Night. Starry Night, 1889
  • Death

    Throughout his life van Gogh had suffered with mental illness but towards the end of his life, it became uncontrollable and he was even unable to paint. His depression deepened and on July 27, 1890 he walked into a field and shot himself in the chest. He survived the shot, but died two days later. Last year at Auvers
