James White originally founded UTK to be what was then known as Blount College in 1794. Samuel Carrick served as the first president. Today, we have 2 residence halls named after him; North and South Carrick Hall. After Carrick died, the college closed for a couple of years. It reopened in 1840 due to a rise in education importance and popularity and was renamed East Tennessee University. (1) -
Catherine Wiley made drawings similar to this one for UTK's original yearbooks from 1895-1897. She made many pencil sketches and ink drawings in this time period. This particular drawing was made for a class and year in one of the university's year books. (2) -
In 1921, one of the most famous buildings on campus, Ayers Hall, was built. It closed for a few years for construction but now, it is mostly used for classes in arts and sciences. It also was a big inspiration during the early football seasons, and even inspired the Tennessee checkerboard theme on the bell tower. (3) -
This letter is from the board of trustees as a surrender of the athletic department charter and resolving problems in 1948- 1959. It mentions the school as "The University of Knoxville" and decides not to tax on admission to sporting events. This particular piece was made in July of 1951. (4)
