    In 1844, the first leisure cruise ship came into the world. The first cruise ship was Peninsular steam navigation company which we now know as P&0, this makes P&0 the worlds oldest cruise line. The destinations Peninsular steam navigation company advertised for sea tours in 1844 were to destinations such as Gibraltar, Malta and Athens. Peninsular steam navigation company sailed from Southampton.

    In 1970s the aspects of cruising was showcased to the world via a popular US TV series, 'The Love Boat'. The show was filmed on board Princess Cruises' Sun Princess and was introduced the concept of holiday cruising to the mass market. It was a huge success for both sitcom and as an advert for the cruising industry.

    Between the 1990 and the 2000 many cruise lines such as Norwegian Cruise Lines, Holland America and Olsen Cruise Lines built an array of new ships. Also new lines such as Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea and many more were founded and large corporations such as Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean begin to emerge.

    Between 2000 and 2010, lines including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Cunard commence construction of some of the largest vessels ever built. These each offer never before seen amenities and a sense of luxury to a higher number of passengers.

    Between 2000 and 2010 P&O Cruises got acquired by Carnival Corporation in 2003. Also in 2000s, Cunard built three new vessels which are known as the 'Three Queens' ;Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth which all remain in service to this day.
