The History of The Internet

  • HyperText.

    In 1965 HyperText was created, introducing what would be one of the most widely-used systems ever.
  • ARPANET was born.

    ARPANET, the very first computer network, was created.
  • 4 computers.

    In 1969 the internet was run exclusively through 4 computers.
  • DNS

    In 1983 a new way of organising the internet came into the limelight, DNS (Domain Name System.)
  • NSFNET.

    In 1986 a new network was introduced, NSFNET.
  • 20,000 Computers.

    By the end of 1987 there were over 20,000 computers using the internet.
  • ISP's.

    In 1989 the first ISP's (Internet Service Providers) were introduced to the picture.
  • ARPANET < NSFNET.

    In 1990 NSFNET replaced ARPANET as the backbone of the internet entirely.
  • Commercial Internet.

    NSFNET was finally released to the public in 1992. Allowing for your average person to use the internet.
  • NSFNET < ISP's.

    In 1995 NSFNET shut down handing over all responsibility to the ISP's.
