The first Stanely Cup is played between the Montreal AAA team and the Ottawa Generals. Montreal won the first stanely cup using simple wooden sticks.

Cy Denneny created the first "banana blade" or curve in 1927, but the idea did not catch on. NHL players did not revisit this idea again until Stan Mikita broke his stick in practice during the 1960s and found that the curve in the stick improved his shot.

Aluminum sticks gained popularity during the 1980s, due to a lighter weight than wooden sticks. These became the first non-wooden sticks to gain popularity because of their durability and the fact that you could purchase replacement blades for them.
