    Charter of 1732
    The Charter of 1732 was the document that granted rights to create a government. On April 21, 1732 Engand's King George III signed a charter establishing the colony and its own governing board. King George III granted this to James Oglethorpe. But now the people in charge were the trustees. The mission of this charter was to spread God, gold, and glory. However the charter prohibited alcohol and slavery. The trustees were also restricted to own land or holding office.

  • Founding of Savannah

    Founding of Savannah
    The first city found in Georgia was Savannah by James Oglethorpe. He arrieved with his men on the Anne. They landed on Yamacraw Bluff which was on the Savannah River and met Tomochichi. Tomochichi was the chief of the Yamacraw Tribe and gave Oglethorpe permission to land on Yamacraw Bluff. They had a translator named Mary Musgrove who was half British and half Indian. They then made peace with eachother.

    The group that found Ebenezer was the Salzburgers. The Salzburgers originally came from central Europe (present day Austria). They moved because they were banished because of their religious beliefs.

    The group that founded the city was the Scots. The Scots were recruited to Georgia because they were needed to help protect the colony because they were said to have the finest soliders in the world.

    Battle of Bloody Marsh
    General James Oglethorpe led the Georgia coloists in this battle against the Spanish. The English won this battle with the assistance of the Scots. This battle was important because Oglethorpe's men gained confidence and the Spaniards lost confidence. It also marked the last major effort of the Spanish trying to take over Georgia.

    The group of coloists that always complained about the trustees were the Malcontents. They complained about how they couldn't have slaves or alcohol or land inheritance when every other colony did. Georgia had many different royal governors. The first was John Reynolds, then Henry Ellis, and finally James Wright.

    The war was between the French and the American colonists and the Americans won. The Americans won all of France's western land. The French and Indian War was a cause of the American Revolution because they were in debt. They needed more money so they raised taxes dramatically. This made the colonists very angry.

    The Proclamantion of 1763 said that all of the new western land would belong to the Indians. King George lll decided to do this because he wanted to aviod war. This made the coloists angry because Indians were said to be savages. The colonists population was growing so why didn't they get the western land?

    The Stamp Act taxed all paper products like newspapers, documents, and even playing cards. The British passed this act because they were still in debt from the French ad Indian War. They needed more money! The colonists were angry about this because paper products were used all the time and they found it unfair they had to pay for necessities.

    The British passed these laws because some colonists boycotted their tea and wrote strongly worded letters. There were 5 laws and they said the Boston Harbor to be shut off so no exports or imports could come in, patriots had to house british soliders, removed the colonists right to vote and only hold 1 town meeting per year, allowed governors to move trials to a Bristish colony or England to aviod biased courts for British officials, and the British parliament took away land from the colinies.

    The main author of the Declaration of Independence was Thomas Jefferson but he also had help from 5 men including Benjamin Franklin and John Adams. It said that the Patriots and the USA were no longer British territory and they were their own independent country. The three men from Georgia that signed the Declaration of Independence were Lyman Hall, Button Gwinett, and George Walton.
  • Battle of Kettle Creek

    Battle of Kettle Creek
    The Patriots won the Battle of Kettle Creek. Elijah Clarke led the Patriots to victory. Austin Dabney was the only black solider in this battle and for his service he was rewarded with land in Madison county.

    Savannah was controled by the British in 1779. The French helped the Patriots in the Siege of Savannah and unfortunately the Patriots and the French did not succeed. The British won and kept possession of Savannah.
