    By this date a lot of people who had been working in agriculture had now moved to factory jobs due to labour saving advances. The benefit of this was that most factories in parts of England had introduced half day on saturdays. People often filled time by taking part in games such as football as they now had more time for leisure activities.

    Cambridge Rules
    In 1848, a group of representatives and students from Cambridge had the idea to draw up a definitive set of rules. Association football allowed no hacking, tripping or handling the ball. As the committee said, it would be the triumph of 'skill over force'.

    this match was Scotland vs England and it was played at Hamilton Crescent in Partick, Scotland. The match finished in a 0–0 draw and was watched by 4,000 spectators.

    This act that was passed by the Parliament meant that the age that children had to attend school to was now increased to the age of 10. This therefore mean that they had time to play games like football at school.

    The first international match played by teams outside of Great Britain was between USA and Canada, played in Newark and ended with Canada winning 1-0.

    The first player to ever be transferred for a fee of over £100 was Scottish striker Willie Groves when he made the switch from West Bromwich Albion to Aston Villa in 1893

    At the 1900 Summer Olympics, a football tournament was contested for the first time. Only two demonstration matches were held between the three club sides, and no medals were awarded. Great britian beat France 4-0 then France beat Belgium 6-2

    FIFA was founded in Paris on 22 May 1904 – comprising football associations from France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, with Germany pledging to join.

    The first radio commentary was between Arsenal and Sheffield United both of division one the match ended in a 1-1 draw and the game was played at Highbury.

    First Fifa world cup
    This was held in Uruguay and was contrested between 13 teams that were invited by Fifa, seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North America. In the final, Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2 in front of a crowd of 93,000 people in Montevideo, and became the first nation to win a World Cup.

    This was a specially arranged friendly between Arsenal and Arsenal Reserves at Highbury. The first cup final to be shown on the BBC was on 30th April 1938 between Huddersfield Town and Preston North End.

    UFEA formed
    UEFA was founded on 15 June 1954 in Basel, Switzerland after consultation between the Italian, French, and Belgian associations. Initially, the European football union consisted of 25 members which number doubled by the early 1990s.

    This took place on the afternoon of 4th September 1955 in Lisbon when Sporting Lisbon played out a 3-3 draw with Partizan Belgrade, and the first European Cup goal was scored by Sporting's Joao Baptista Martins.

    Tottenham Hotspur beat Atlético Madrid at Feijenoord Stadion in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Tottenham won the match 5–1. This made Tottenham the first British team to win a major European trophy.

    The first edition of Match of the Day was screened on BBC2 and showed highlights of a game between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield. The programme's audience was estimated at only 20,000, less than half of the attendance at the ground. The show was presented by Kenneth Wolstenholme and is now presented by ex-footballer Gary Lineker.

    On this date in 1968 Manchester united became the first english side to win the european cup by beating Benfica 4-1 with the goals being scored by Bobby Charlton x2 George Best and Brian Kidd got one each. the match was played at Wembley and was watched by a crowd of 100,000 and an estimated 250 million TV viewers.

    In 1975 Giuseppe Savoldi became the first player in the world to cost a club more than one million pounds. His transfer fee from Bologna to Napoli was £1,200,000 making him the most valuable player in the world at the time.

    Northern Ireland qualified for the 1982 World Cup. Their opening game was against Yugoslavia, the game finished goalless. Five days later they drew 1–1 with Honduras, They needed a win against spain in the last group anddid just that by beating them 1-0 by a goal from Gerry Armstrong even know they were down to 10 men since the 60th minute. They were later put out by France being best 4-1.

    This occured during an FA cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest when a human crush resulted in the deaths of 96 people and injuried 766 people. It is the worst stadium-related disaster in British history

    Sky sports began in 1991 when it replaced the sports channel. Sky Sports is the dominant subscription television sports brand in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It has played a major role in the increased popularity of football, sometimes playing a large role in organisational changes in the sports it broadcasts, most notably when it encouraged the Premier League to break away from The Football League in 1992.

    On this date it was agreed that the football league first division that was in place from 1888-1992 would be end and the Premier league was formed. the reason for this was partly to be able to take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal. The newly named UEFA champions league also begun.

    The MLS is a professional football league in north America with teams from America and Canada. MLS experienced some difficulties in its first seasons, with the league losing money in the early years, resulting in two teams folding after the 2001 season. MLS has rebounded since then, with increased attendance and currently has 19 teams, with further expansion planned.

    This new rule know meant that football players that were out of contract from their club could now move to a different club within their new club having to pay their old club a transfer fee.

    It was held from 31 May to 30 June 2002 in South Korea and Japan, making it the first World Cup held in Asia. It was also the last World Cup in which the golden goal rule was applied. Brazil won the tournament for the fifth time, beating Germany 2–0 in the final.

    BT launched their new sports channel to rival sky sports and also have some rights to premier league matches as well as leagues like the french league and the seria A.

    On the date Gareth Bale became the worlds most expensive player when Real Madrid agreed to pay 85.3 million pound (100 million euro) for Bale from Tottenham Hotspur. Since then he has scored decisive goal in the copa del rey final and the champions league final.
