The first fleet arrived on January 18th 1788. The captain of the fleet was captain James Cook. After their long journey they finally arrived in Botany Bay NSW. The first fleet traveled here because over in England all of the gaols were full of convicts, they traveled here to build more gaols and prisons. The first fleet traveled in eleven ships to get here.

Explorers George Bass and Matthew Flinders visit Derwent as they encircled Van Diemen's Land; George Bass climbed some of Mount Wellington (then known as Table Mountain) on Christmas Day. They traveled around the entire island of Van Diemans Land via ship. The sloop called "Norfolk".

Lieutenant-Colonel David Collins' 262-member party arrived at Sullivans Cove in February, 1804. The township, which became known as Hobart Town, grew to 433 when, in June, the rest of his Port Phillip party arrived!

The Black War represents the period of conflict between British colonists and Tasmanian Aborigines in the early nineteenth century. Although it is not clear when the conflict began and ended, it is knowen as the time of declared martial law by the colonial government between 1828 and 1832.
The term Black War is also sometimes used to describe, later conflicts between European colonists and Aboriginal Australians on mainland Australia. -
In late 1855 the privy council approved the colony changing its name from van deimans land to Tasmainia.

The current state flag of Tasmania was officially brought in following an announcment by Tasmanian colonial Governor Sir Frederick Weld on 25 September 1876, and was first published in the Tasmanian Gazette the same day. The flag was introduced to show the independence of the state of Tasmania.
