The Evolution of the Radio

    Radio is Invented
A young Italian named Gugliemo Marconi invented what he called at the time "The Wireless Telegraph" whilst experimenting in his parent's attic. He used radio waves to trasmit morse codes which is what we know as being the radio. This was siginificant beause it was essentially the beggining of what was to be known as today as the 'radio'.

    Timeline of the Radio

  • Marconi sets up his first company

Marconi sets up his first company
By the end of 1901, Marconi had founded his own commercial wireless company and broadcast the first transatlantic signal.
This was a siginificant event because it showed the product (the radio) becoming mainstream and avaialble to the masses.
  • Long distance radio trasmissions

    Long distance radio trasmissions
Canadian-born physicist Reginald Fessenden changed Marconi's method of transmitting signals (coded dots and dashes). He then set up the first long-distance transmission of human voice and music from his own radio station at Brant Rock, Massachusetts. Reginald's signal was received as far away as Norfolk, Virginia. This then set the stage for radio stations to become more commercial (adverts could be aired) and music could be broadcasted as well as much more.
  • Frequency signals could be amplified

    Frequency signals could be amplified
A person named Lee De Forest introduced his Auddion Signal Detector which allowed the normal radio frequency signal to be amplified, so that radio stations could be heard from and tuned into from more distant locations. This was significant because it gave the platform for the radio to become very popular, and have a potentially large audience.
  • Entertainment broadcasting

    Entertainment broadcasting
Entertainment broadcasting began in 1910 were news topics were discussed, music were broadcasted from opera houses etc. It was a siginificant event because, it was not simply talk shows where matters or news were discussed, but also music among other things.
  • FM frequency were found that they could be produced

FM frequency were found that they could be produced
Edwin Armstrong discovered how FM broadcasts could be produced. The FM broadcast allowed radio frequencies to be clearer than the AM . It was important because if the public may not have been able to hear the radio stations, then they might have not bought a radio, (thinking it is not that good since it is not clear).
  • Boom in Radios

    Boom in Radios
the 1950s were seen as monumental period for the radio whereby comedies, dramas, variety shows, game shows, and popular music shows drew millions of listeners across America. As a result of this other forms of media such as television slowly faded and were almost losing in terms of a competition. This was a siginificant time, because it showed how radios had grown so much that they were rivalling even telelvisions (which were very popular).
  • Stereophonic broadcasting

    Stereophonic broadcasting
Developments such as stereophonic broadcasting, which began in the 1960s helped radio to maintain its popularity. This practically allowed radios to be further amplified to high fidelity for the liking of the public. It was vital that the radio improved its fidelity, because it was still a new product, and any potential pitfall could bring the audience to think it is not a good 'service/product'. Moreover, this allowed for the radio to stay in competition with the TV.
  • Radio was officially popular

    Radio was officially popular
In the 1999 Arbitron report, it was found that 95% of Americans listened to the radio at least once a week. This was a siginificant event because it showed how popular the radio had become, since there were regular large amounts of viewers.
