New South Wales was the first state to find gold in Australia on 12th of February 1851. After people found out about gold in New South Wales, thousands of miners rushed to the place in New South Wales, Bathurst to find gold.

After New South Wales found gold, many people from Victoria wanted to move to New South Wales to also find gold. So, the population of Victoria was getting less and less. A governor named Governor La Trobe offered a reward to anyone in Victoria who can find gold. The first person who found gold in Victoria was a person called Thomas Hiscock and he found it in a place called Ballarat.

The South Australia government offered a reward if anyone had found gold in 1851. There was a person called William Chapman, he had found gold in South Australia within a year but it was in 1852. After the find of gold 10,000 people came and search for that place, William Chapman had found. It was in a place called Echunga. But after so many people came and searched, the gold was gone really quickly.

In 1858, the find of gold was not much and it was a lot of hard work. So the government of Victoria had helped by donating 15000 pounds (27718.29 Australian dollars) to help the miners get home.

In 1871, there were construction workers who were building an overland telegraphy (telephone) line between Alice Springs and Darwin. While doing this construction, the construction workers had accidently found gold. So, many of the workers left the job to find gold.

Western Australia was the last state to find gold. In 1892, two people called Arthur Bayley and Williams Flat found gold near a water hole in Coolgardie. This discovery had made a town start.
