When the first Fleet landed IN 1788 there was no limit set to the Eastern boundary so New Zealand was included as part of New South Wales until 1841.

In 1803 the first official settlement was established to ensure French explorers could not claim it. It became a place secondary punishments for convicts who had committed crimes in New South Wales. It was announced that it would be a separate colony in 1825

In 1829 a British settlement of the free settlers was established on the Swan River.

In 1836 South Australia was announced that they are now a free colony.

In 1847 North Australia was created with its main settlement at Port Curtis. In 1847 the settlement failed after six months and the new colony was officially reincorporated into New South Wales.

In the 1790s part of the Port Phillip district of new south wales had been settled by escaped convicts.
