The Development of Australian Colonies

  • The first Australian colony was established at Sydney Cove (NSW)

  • Period: to

    1788 - 1911

  • Settlement in Risdon (Tasmania)

  • Settlement in Port Phillip District (Victoria)

    This was abandoned in 1804 due to harsh conditions.

  • Settlement at Redcliffe (Queensland)

    The Moreton Bay Settlement was a penal colony. It was later moved to the site we now know as Brisbane.

  • The colony of Van Diemen's Land is established (Tasmania)

    It's name was officially changed to Tasmania on 1 January 1856.

  • Settlement in Albany (Western Australia is established)

  • South Australia is established

    It was never a convict colony but rather a place where immigrants lived. Some escaped convicts lived in the area as well as some ex-convicts moved there from other colonies.

  • Victoria is established

    After separation from New South Wales, Victoria became its own province.

  • Queensland is established

    After its separation from New South Wales, Queensland became its own province. On 23 December 1862 the area of Queensland was expanded.

  • Settlement in Darwin

  • The Australian Capital Territory is established

  • The Northern Territory is established

    Up until this point, the Northern Territory had been under the control of South Australia.
