    The Dawes Act was adopted by Congress in 1887, to survey American Indian Tribal and divide it into allotments for individual Indians. Who accepted alloments and lived separately from the tribe was granted United States citizenship.
  • Dawes Commission

    The Dawes Commission was created to try to persuade the Five Civilized Tribes to agree to allotment plans.
  • Curtis Act

    The Curtis Act allowed the federal government to ignore the tribal government.
  • Indian Reorganization Act

    Franklin Roosevelt supported the US Indian Reorganization Act because many Native American tribes suffered dispossession of lands and other social ills.
    It ended allotment and gave them rights to reorganize and form their own governments.
