These countries became known as satellite nations.The Soceit Union wasnted more power and tried to establish more communist countries. This global competition became known as the Cold War

  • The Berlin Blockade

    The Berlin Blockade was the first real test of containment. At the end of WWII Germany was divided into seperate zones, East Germany and West Germany. Berlin was located in the Soviet occupied zone but was divided amongst France, Great Britain, The Soviet Union, and the United States. The United States and Great Britain had to airlift needed supplies to West Germany. The Soviets finally agreed to lift the blockade in 1949.

    After World War II, civil war broke out in China. Communists defeated the government led by Chiand Kai-shek

  • The Korean War

    North Korea invaded South Korea in June 1950. The invasion was an attempt at reuniting the country. At the time, North Korea was a communist country and South Korea was not. Members of the United Nations and the United States helped to defend South Korea.

  • The Vietnam War

    French Colonies in Southeast Asia became independent. Vietnam was divided just as Korea was. Vietnam had a communist north and a noncommunist south. The war lasted nearly twenty years.

  • The Cuban Missile Crisis

    A U.S aircrafthad seen what looked like missile bases on Cuba. President Kennedy met in secret with his advisors and discussed the issue. He took action by tdemanding that the Soviets remove the bases. The U.S was ready to take military action. The Soviets backed down and removed the missiles from Cuba.

  • The End of the Cold War!!

    The Cold war has ended. The USSR's economy was failing, the citizens were at unrest, and the political system was stifling. Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the Soviet Union in 1985. He came up with reform policies that would restore the USSR to a democratic country and will also liberate the satellite countries.
