    United Nations Formed

    After World War 2, the United Nations was formed in order to maintain peace and security throughout the world. 51 different countries joined. They wanted to progress as a society and live better lives.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine

    President Truman gave a speech to congress in 1947 about helping countries who were threatened by the Soviet Union or Communism. Due to this speech, many view this as being the declaration of war that started the Cold War.
  • “Hollywood Ten”

    “Hollywood Ten”

    The House Un-American Activities Committee looked at hollywood workers in order to testify before court in order to find communists. They looked at 40 different people, but 10 refused to testify. After their short trials, they were convicted to one year in prison and to pay $1000. This event blacklisted them into further work which followed them throughout the rest of their lives.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan

    Secretary of State, George Marshall, made a proposition that the U.S. should help with the economic restoration of Europe after World War two. This caused the Economic Recovery Act of 1948 to be signed by president Truman on April 3rd, 1948.

    NATO formed

    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization- NATO- was formed in order to maintain peace in Europe after World War two. The treaty was signed in Washington D.C. by European and North American countries. They wanted to be prepared for the threat of the Soviet Union.

    Bay of Pigs

    The cuban government was overthrown by a communist party, making Fidel Castro in charge. He wanted all foreign countries to leave, especially the U.S.. This caused the U.S. to take over cuba. President Kennedy decided to send troops to the Bay of Pigs, but once they got there they were outmatched by Cuba. If the U.S. had more air support they would have had the upper hand. Castro was popular among Cubans, so they did not fight for the U.S.. In the end, Cuba won and the U.S. failed.

    Berlin Wall Goes Up

    The Berlin Wall was built in order to prevent Western ideas from entering East Germany. A physical barrier was made to separate East and West Berlin. There were over 30 miles of barbed wire that separated Berlin. This kept out the ideas, but this wall trapped many innocent civilians.

    U.S. official enters Vietnam War

    The U.S. wanted to prevent any country from turning into a communist country, so in order for Vietnam to not fall to communism, the U.S. joined the Vietnam War. This was not an easy war they fought. The first major battle the U.S. fought was the Battle of la Dang on November 14 and 18 in 1965.

    Soviets invade Afghanistan

    The Soviets invaded Afghanistan because they said the wanted to keep the Soviet-Afghan Friendship Treaty of 1978, but they really invaded them in order to spred their ideas and keep out their opposing ideas. This led to a war lasting 10 years.
  • Berlin Wall Comes Down

    Berlin Wall Comes Down

    Peaceful protesters in East Germany caused the collapse in their government, and as a result the wall fell. This reunited thousands of people.
