    The Creation of NATO
    NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is an intergovernmental military alliance. The organization that provides defense to an attack from an outside party. This is vital because if the USSR were to attack any NATO countries, all who were apart of NATO would join into the fight.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    After World War 2, Korea was divided between the 38th parallel with the north controlled by Soviet backed DPRK and the democractic Republic of Korea. The DPRK invaded the south korean peninsula nearly controlling all of Korea until the United States along with 21 other countries provide a fighting force to rid the communist influence in Korea. The end result was a stalemate and an Amristice.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    The United States enters the war after a decade of countless fighting between the Vietmanese. First hand accounts of guerilla stlye fighting and new technology such as the helicopter, jet fighters, and agent orange napalm gas gave what many may call the bloodiest war. The United States call to action during 1963-1969 was primarily to stop the spread of communism throughout Asia. Many opposed the war and gave protest to keep America from being a police force to the world.

    The Soviet space program launched a low orbit satelite into space. This was the first, which then led to a political and nationalist movement known as the space race. The space race led to many adnvaces into technology as both USSR and US fight for the superior nation.

    U2 Incident
    A United States U2 spy plane was shot down over soviet airspace. The United States first denied the presence of the military craft until the USSR withheld saying they have incriminating photos, and the United States surviving pilot, Francis Gary Powers.

    The Bay of Pigs invasion was an unsucessful military operation. This was an attempt to over throw the Cuban government. The orders were given by President John F. Kennedy. The CIA trained cuban exiles to use as an invasion. Unfortunatly the communist cubans outnumbered the exiles and the invasion failed.

    The Construction of the Berlin Wall
    The Government of East Germany erected the Berlin Wall gto prevent Easterners fleeing to the west. This acted as a symbol of divsion between democracy and communism.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    Cuban Missle Crisis
    After a failed attempt on cuba, the USSR decided to place missiles in cuba to deter any more attacks from the United States. Castro and Nikita Kruschev held a secret meeting in terms of building several secret missile sites in cuba. The United States found out and threatened to retaliate. Both the USSR and US made an agreement, making the USSE pull out all missiles in cuba.

    First Moon Landing
    After the Soviets launched Luna, a russian satelite, the space ra ce began. Both USSR and US competed to have men in space, and land on the moon. On a July evening, NeilArmstrong and Ediwn "Buzz" Aldwin landed on the moon. TYhe duration on them being on the surface was 21 hours amd 31 minutes.

    Nixon Visits China
    Before seeking presidency, Nixon sought for good feelings between China and the US. Early in his first term he sent subtle messages between China and the US. In 1972 Nixon flies over with his top advisors and his wife to tour schools, factories and experience the culture. China was then put a\on the spot when it was dubbed to be on United States side in the Cold War.

    1980 Hockey Game
    Tensions were high at the Lake Placid Winter Games, because the soviets had won every hokcy game since 1960. Just before the games began the USSR invades Afghanistan and rumours had it that the soviets were not going to compete. The round robin tournament ending in a US victory would be known as the Miracle on Ice. Boosting morale of the Americans brought great nationalism.

    Similar to NATO, Eastern European nations in alliances with the Sovet Union sign in agreement for Soviet-Led military actions and discuss agreements for future decades.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    The Eastern Government Official Günter Schabowski said to the public travel to west is now open. Thousands from both sides of the wall gathered in reunited both sides and tearing down the wall. As the wall came down it was evident that the Cold War was finally over.
  • The Fall of the USSR

    The Fall of the USSR
    The USSR was at a standstill by 1985. Gorbachav, the leader of the USS at the time initated two new policies, one called glasnost (freedom of speech) and perestroika (an economic reform). Citizens had a taste of democracy and both political officals and citizens knew it was time for a change. By the end of December and USSR split up into 15 countries and people across the globe knew the cold war has offically ended.
