    Joseph McCarthy

    Joseph McCarthy was a senator. He scared people into believing lots of innocent people were communists during the Cold War. His blaming of innocen people became known as McCarthyism. He spent five years doing this. He was very intimidating, and people feared to speak out against him.
  • HUAC created.

    HUAC created.
    HUAC was the House of UnAmerican Activities Committee. Peoples' lives were affected by the hearings. It fed into the Red Scare. HUAC made people even more scared during this era. They were already afraid of communists, and this made their fear worse.

    UN created
    Roosevelt and Churchill issued it. 26 representatives of countries signed it. They wanted to protect themselves from the Axis Powers. This was right after Pearl Harbor, and the United States was still recovering. Military strategies were also talked about.
  • Harry Truman becomes president

    Harry Truman becomes president was the president when the Cold War started. He is responsible for the Truman Doctrine. He realized how dangerous Stalin was. He also started America's policy of helping countries in threat of being under communism. He was a strong leader. Without Truman, Stalin might have succeeded more.

    He was always committed to communism. He thought everyone should be communist. He was a founding member of the French Communist Party of 1920. He was an outspoken leader. He also desired to take control in Vietnam.

    The big 3 met in 1945. It was Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin. They wanted to divide Germany into 4 parts. Stalin also promised free elections and a fair governent. In the end, it didn't work.

    The third conference with the big three. It was filled with intense debate. Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, and Harry Truman. This conference discussed the postwar fate of Germany. They wanted to divide it into 3 zones, and save unification for another date. Stalin finally knew what he was facing.

    The Red Scare was the fear of communism. Everyone was so scared of everyone around them being spies or communists. Nobody trusted anyone. HUAC and McCarthy fed into this, and they made it worse for people. Nobody could go against it, or they were "communist."
  • Truman Doctrine announced

    Truman's address officially announced the Cold War. The Truman Doctrine was Truman's plege to provide economic and military aid to countries threatened by Communism. It outlined the parameters of the Cold War. A lot of people didn't support it, but it did set guidelines.

    The Marshall Plan was a huge success. It was to deliver aid to the un-communist countries. The US feared communism, and thought it would bring bad to the world. The Marshall Plan helped the western countries' gross national product rise 10%. It also helped the western countries get new industries.

    The CIA stands for the the Central Intelligence Agency. It was created during the second Red Scare, when people were terrified of communists. Roosevelt was always into the American central intelligence efforts. They got more power two years after being created, The CIA still exists today.

    The Hollywood 10 were the few people who did not cooperate with HUAC. They used amendments as their defense, and they refused to answer questions. They all actually were communists, but were not allowed to say so. They were all to serve one year in prison, but didn't do so.
  • Korea becomes Communist

    Korea becomes Communist Japanese surrender in 1945, Korea was split in half. It was communist north and democratic south. The 38th latitude line split them. But when the official government was established, the north stayed communist, while the south fell to dictatorship.
  • East Germany becomes communist

    East Germany becomes communist German Democratic Republic was communist when it was created in 1949. Stalin took over the east and it was communist. He wanted Germany to stay weak. He also tried to force West Germany to become communist, but it didn't happen. A wall was put up (and torn down) to divide the east and west side.

    Berlin Blockade/Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin Blockade was the USSR's way of trying to get West Berlin to give in into communism. Everyone was terrified they'd starve. The US stepped in by dropping supplies by plane to the people. There were thousands upon thousands of flights. There were tons of supplies. The blockade finally ended, but it could've been a lot worse if it weren't for the US.

    NATO is a military alliance. All these countries have one another's backs. They are allies during war. NATO is there in case of possible war. If there is a war, all these other countries can back each other, so noone really goes in alone.
  • Mao Zedong comes to power in China

    Mao Zedong comes to power in China is considered to be the father of Communist China. He was involved in the miliary. He proposed many ideas. He also spoke exactly what was on his mind, even dissing Khrushev when he came to power. He remained in the government until 1964. His death in 1976 put China into national grief.

    After becoming communist, Mao said that it was now a "heavenly place." China had so many problems, and they were in terrible shape. The towns had little industry; there were tons of unemployed people. There were shortages of food, and China's population was increasing greatly each year. Lots of laws came in and lots of things were changed when China became a oommunist country.

    North Korea first invaded South Korea. North was communist, and the south was a democracy. The US helped a lot by giving supplies and equipment. The communist armies intervened while the South was in the North. Negotiations began in 1951, and the war was over two years later.

    Nuclear Arms Race was a belief in the Cold War that the more nuclear weapons you had, the more powerful you were. The Russians' H-Bomb in 1953 scared everyone, and it was a dangerous thing. The US was scared, and they created the Artic-Defense and Early Warning system. In the 1960's, tons of money was spent on missiles and weapon systems. The Warsaw Pact also had tons more soldiers than NATO in every section. By 1981, the US had 4,000 planes for nuclear bombing; Soviets had 5,000. 367 billion spent in USA.

    The Space Race really set off the outer space sciences. The Soviets launched a satellite into space. Everytime they did something, we wanted to do something bigger and better. NASA was created, and we got a man on the moon. If it weren't for the Space Race, we wouldn't know a lot of information we know now.

    Dwight D. Eisehower was the 34th president of the United States. He was against Adlai Stevenson. The debate was about communism. He won, and he ran again in 1956. The main issue was his health. He had had a recent heart attack.

    It was a struggle trying to prevent the spread of communism. The United States wanted to unify Vietnam. It was the ultimate failure. A war was never actually declared. Lots of people think it wasn't even the United States' place to be or to intervene.

    Nikita Khrushev comes to power
    He came into power after Stalin died. He was the one who put missiles in Cuba, fueling the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was first Stalin's associate. He was a zealous supporter of him.
  • Warsaw Pact

    The Soviets signed it with seven other countries. It was in response to NATO. The Soviets saw NATO as a threat. It remained until 1991, and one of the countries repealed themself.

    It was the Russian satellite launched during the Space Race. The United States wanted to get aeronautic accomplishment also. They created NASA after Sputnik. Sputnik fueled the Space Race. It also made other countries envious and gave them motivation.

    The United States wanted to advance in aeronautics. The Soviets had launched Sputnik, and there were other successful missions by other countries. NASA was quickly created after Sputnik. Johnson prepared hearing for space and missile activities before NASA was even made. NASA is still here today, and it has helped us learn so many things about outer space.

    Fidel Castro comes to power
    Fidel Castro joined the Cuban People's Party in 1947. The party was against corruption, injustice, poverty, unemployment and low wages. In 1952, he was a candidate for Congress in the Cuban People's Party. He believed strongly in morality. He also wanted to have power over everything. Some of his new laws upset the US, which would soon cause trouble.

    The crisis happened when Soviets shot down a US U-2 plane.
    Eisehnower was forced to admit that the US had been spying on the USSR by the CIA for several years. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. After 2, there was a "spy swap." He had to give back a captured Soviet agent.

    John F. Kennedy was the youngest man to ever be elected president in the US. He was also the first Catholic. He beat out Richard Nixon. The campaign was fought hard, and it was watched on television, Nixon took every opportunity to call Kennedy to young and inexperienced. He was involved in the failure of the Bay of Pigs and the construction of the Berlin Wall.

    It was a failed attempt to try and overthrow the Cuban government run by Fidel Castro. President Kennedy could've used the Air Force on the Cubans, but he decided not to. The Cuban Army stopped the invasion. The fighting ended two days later. This invasion did make Castro scared, though. He feared the United States coming in contact with Cuba again.

    It was the physical division between east and west Germany. The west was a democracy, and the east was communist. It was up for 28 years. It kept them from going to the other side. Its destruction was celebrated around the world.

    Cuba becomes communist Castro announced that Cuba would be a communist country on this day. It became a key part in the Cold War after that since the US was so into containment. Cuba becoming communists was so bad for the US because it is so close. They could easily launch a nuclear bomb and it would hit the US. The Soviets and US decided to take nuclear bombs off of land that was near in October. Cuba is still communist today.

    In a televised speech, President Kennedy said that the US spy planes have discovered Soviet missile bases in Cuba. This was awful, considering Cuba is so close to the US. This was the closest the world has ever gotten to a nuclear war. It was settled, and things turned out okay. Now there is a hotline where the US president and Soviet leader can talk directly in times of crisis.

    In February, there was a raid that killed 8 US soldiers in a campaign. In June, the US reached 75,000 troops in Vietnam. In July, he wanted an additional 100,000 troops. He also allocated 100,000 more for 1966. Johnson also made several changes in leadership.

    The tet offensive was a series of major attacks launched by communist forces in South Vietnam. The Vietcong and the North Vietnamese Army together was 85,000. It was a defensive attack. Vietnam arranged the attack. It was over the Vietnamese New Year, and broke the cease-fire.

    Man on the Moon
    Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. He said the phrase, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." They were in the space race, and the US won this one. Kennedy was determined to get men into space. All of the Apollo missions followed.

    The war had been going on for 4 years now. 31,000 Americans had been killed in the war already. They were behind schedule with 540,000 Americans over in Vietnam with no plans to reduce the number. President Nixon said all of that in his speech. Hardly any progress had been made and he wanted to end the war. He wanted to end it by turned over the fighting to the South Vietnamese while US troops gradually pulled out.

    Kent State was a college that was protesting against the Vietnam War. This was because President Nixon announced that 150,000 more soldiers were needed for the war effort.Twenty-eight guardsmen killed four people, and they injured nine. The charges of the men were dismissed for lack of evidence. Nearly 500 colleges were shut down by the protests.

    He was the 37th president of the US. He was against Humphrey and Wallace. He recieved 43% of the popular vote. He also recieved 301 electoral votes. He ran again in 1972 and he was the obvious choice. He resigned after his scandal in 1974.

    Ho Chi Minh was responsible for this happening. He lived in so many influential countries. He grew fond of communism. He had support from the Soviets and China. Vietnam is still communist today.

    He was the obvious Republican choice. He ran against Jimmy Carter, with George Bush as his vice president. The campaign was centered on the economy. He won 51% of the popular vote. He also won most electoral votes.
