    The fugitive slave act declared that all runaway slaves were to be returned to their masters. Abolitionists called it the "Bloodhound Law"because the dogs were used to track down runaway slaves.

    The Kansas -Nebraska act was designed by Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois. It allowed settlers to determine through Popular Sovereignty whether they would allow slavery within a certain territory.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    In 1846, Dred Scott and his family sued for freedom from their former master's estate. In 1856 the case reached the supreme court. Dred Scott could not sue because african americans were not citezens. Slaves were property and property could be taken anywhere. northerners were horrified by the decision but the southerners rejoiced.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry

    The raid on Harper's Ferry was an attempt by the white abolitionist John Brown to start an armed slave revolt in 1859 by seizing a United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia.John Brown was defeated by U.S. Marines led by Col. Robert E. Lee but we still remember him to this day for his bravery.

    Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States over a deeply divided Democratic Party. Abraham Lincoln only got 40 percent of popular vote because lots of people did not like the decisions he was making but he still beat the other candidates.
