The party nominated former president Martin Van Buren and other candidate. Although they didn't win, the he and other candidates gathered enough votes to promote the party's motto "free soil, free speech, free labor, free men." Violence in Kansas
Congress try to settle the slavery issues in the West by passing the Kansas- Nebraska Act. This caused people who are proslavery and antislavery from other states to come into Kansas, hoping to out number each other, causing so much violence between the two groups. This failed to prevent the civil war because they brought people from different side together and caused violence. The Dred Scott Decision
An African American man named, Dred Scott, have sued his master for traveling with him to a free territory. The court said that African Americans are not considered citizens and have no right to sue. Also, the court stated that the federal government did not have the power stop slavery. The failed to prevent the civil war because it enraged the northerners. John Brown's revolt
John Brown led a group of followers to are black and white to attack northern Virginia aiming to hit Harpen Ferry, Virginia, to take control of the federal weapon supply. He also wished to inspire other African American slave to join the revolution along the way. This didn't prevent the civil war because this was the first official rebellion to the south. The South Secedes
South Carolina and six other sates withdraw from the Union and established their own Confederate constitution saying that they will provide full protection for slavery.
