  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    The Supreme Court ruled unani- mously in the case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional and violated the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. This was important because it began the Civil Rights movenment beginning in schools.
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks
    Rosa Parks agreed to challenge segregation in court. Her decision launched the modern civil rights movement. It was important because she did the first civil disobedience act.
  • Sit-in protest began

    Sit-in protest began
    The sit-ins were intended to shame restaurant managers into integrating their restaurants. Using these protests, CORE suc- cessfully integrated many restaurants, theaters, and other public facilities in Chicago, Detroit, Denver,and Syracuse. It was important becuase more African Americans started to protest together.

    When 200,000 peaceful protesters gathering in Washington, D. C., where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech. It was important because his speech gave hope to many African Americans.

    It was a landmark piece of civil rights legislation in the United States that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It was important because it was the first written act to outlaw discrimination.
  • Malcolm X assassination

    Malcolm X assassination
    He played an active role in the prison debate society. He joined the Nation of Islam who were led by Elijah Muhammad. They preached black nationalism. His speeches and ideas from those years with the Black Muslims is what he is most remembered for. It was important because it motivated people to make a change and stand up for what they believe in.

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    Law passed at the time of the civil rights movement. It eliminated various devices, such as literacy tests, that had traditionally been used to restrict voting by black people. It was important because African Americans could now vote.
  • Kerner Commission

    Kerner Commission
    It was an 11-member commission established by President Lyndon B. Johnson to investigate the causes of the 1967 race riots in the United States and to provide recommendations for the future. It was important because the government started to look into more cases.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated

    Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated
    Dr. King’s assassination touched off both national mourning and riots in more than 100 cities, including Washington, D.C. TheReverend Ralph Abernathy, who had served as a trusted assistant to Dr. King for many years, led the Poor People’s Campaign in King’s absence. It was important because everyone had so much faith and trust in him and their lives shattered shortly after and they had to not give up hope.
  • Civil Rights Act passed

    Civil Rights Act passed
    The act contained a fair housing provision outlawing discrimination in housing sales and rentals and gave the Justice Department authority to bring suits againstsuch discrimination. It was important because it was another written act that went against discrimination to the people.
