The Dual Alliance
The Dual Alliance was an alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary and it was part of a system to prevent war. These two countries agreed to fight together if Russia attacked either one of them. They used an alliance system which stated they would fight together in case of an attack. -
The Triple Alliance
The Triple Alliance was an alliance made between Germany, Italy and Austria - Hungary before World War 1 started. This alliance ended was formed to stop Italy from allying themselves with Russia. This was important to WW1 because it allowed Germany to have other people attack with them. In order to keep themselves working together, they used the alliance system. -
Rise of Kaiser Wilhelm II
Kaiser Wilhelm II forces Bismark to resign from his post because he does not want to share the power with anyone. Wilhelm wanted to show the Germany was strong and that they could defeat anyone who got in the way of them. He also let the treaty between Germany and Russia collapse completely. This was significant because Russia was able to make an alliance with France. -
The Alliance of Russia and France
After The Triple Alliance had been formed, Russia was very vulerable. They decided they needed an aly in case the countries in the triple alliance attacked. France had been isolated so they made the perfect alliance for Russia. This way, if the Germans attacked, they would be prepared to fight. -
Conflicts Over Morocco
Between 1905 and 1911, there was a dispute between France and Germany because they both wanted more land and Morroco was the the land they were fighting for. Most of Europe was on France's side so Germany let them have it instead of going to war with them. This is a great example of imperialism because both of these countries want more land to modernize and control. -
Triple Entente
Britain, Russia and France agreed to make an alliance in order to protect themselves from the countries involved in the triple alliance. This was important because it ensured that Britain would not go to war against Russia or France. -
Austria Annexing Bosnia and Herzegovina
Austra decides to take over Bosnia and Herzegovina because they wanted more land. This angered the Serbian rulers because they wanted control over their own land. This shows nationalism because the Serbians wanted to protect their land from Austria taking over. They are passionate about their country staying safe. -
The Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
Archduke Ferdinand and his wife were both assassinated on this day. These two people were assassinated by the Bosnian Serv assassins because they wanted control of their own country back. The goal of this was to get rid of the Austrian rule over Serbia. This was important because the Serbians wanted to regain control and it had worked. -
War is Declared On Germany
Germany declared war on France and Russia so Great Britain decided to declare war on Germany because of the alliance system they were in. This was important because it was the first real act of war in world war 1.
