American Standard Code for Information Exchange is invented. It allows machines from different manufactors to exchange data.

WAN

Lawrence Roberts and Thomas Marill join together to create the first wide area network through long distance dial-up between a computer in Massachusetts and California.

Email

Ray Tomlinson creates a program to send emails over the ARPANET and develops the @ user.

The Alto

Jan 1, 1974

Xerox Palo Alto Research center designs the Alto. It is the first work station that has a mouse for input. It can store several files in windows, has menus and icons, and can link into the local network.

Home Computers

Class of microcomputers that eventually became popular during the 1980s. The most common use was for playing video games. Early microcomputers include the Altair 8800.

Asia Gets Connected

Kilnam Cohn, a professor, develops the first internet connection in Asia, called SDN.

First Macintosh
