The band was formed when the local council worker organised numerous gigs for teens. Healy found Hann who "came up to [him] and said he wanted to play one of these shows." The band began playing covers until they "eventually wrote a song", according to Healy.

With the release of their first EP in August 2012, titled Facedown, a song by the band was first played on UK national radio, this being "The City", which appeared as part of a BBC program with guest Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 1. Once again, The 1975 grabbed all the attention on national radio in late 2012, when BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe promoted the single "Sex" from the group's second EP, Sex, the which was published on September 19, 2012.

They went on a tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, before starting a tour of the United States in the spring. Following the release of the Music for Cars EP on March 4, The 1975 found success from the single "Chocolate", which peaked at number nineteen on the UK Singles Chart. On May 20 the group released EP IV, which included a new version of the song "The City".

In January 2014 the band performed in New Zealand and Australia, in April 2014 the band performed for the first time at the largest music and arts festival in the United States, the Coachella Festival. The same month, the group played at the Royal Albert Hall.

Their second studio album was released in February 2016, quickly becoming a worldwide success, making the band more internationally recognized. The first single "Love Me" was released before the album was released. Followed the single Ugh! and then The Sound, the latter quickly becoming one of the hits of the moment and used for the movie "Me Before You" and a Volkswagen commercial. It was ranked # 1 on the Billboard in countries like the United States and England.

On May 31, 2018 the band released a new single, "Give Yourself A Try", the first of their new and third studio album "A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships". On July 19 they released a second single, "Love It If We Made It", and on August 15 "TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME". The first single is a kind of list of situations that young people in modern society come up with, naming Matty Healy's personal experiences and making references to the support and trust that each person has.

On February 21, the band announced that the album's first single would be released on May 31, with the next album "Before Reading Festival," which was released on August 23. On July 23 all social media pages associated with the band were deactivated, the next day all the band's accounts were reactivated and the first song on the album, "The 1975" was released. Then the main song « People »launched on August 22.

The band released the third single from the album, "Me & You Yogether Song." Before releasing it, it was first played live in a live performance for British radio, then an interview was given in which Healy explains where the song came from. «This song has many things has been a retrospective experience, it feels like the music we grew up with, you know, emo music and such things, this album talks about the experience of four different people who have changed a lot in recent years» .
