    The Australian Federation flag
    The Australian Federation flag (also known as) the New South Wales Ensign was a result of an attempt in the 1830s for a national flag of Australia. Captain Jacob Gronow proposed the flag in 1831 he also designed the flag which was based on the Colonial flag.
  • Federation gets a start.

    A serious movement for federation arose in the late 1880s, a time when there was increasing nationalism amongst Australians. The idea of becoming Australian was celebrated with songs and poems. Australian colonies were influenced by other federations which had emerged around the world in Canada Switzerland and the U.S.

    The efforts for federation were dodged because of th elack of support for movement. Conventions were held during the 1890s to develop a constitution for the Commonwealth.

    In New South Wales in 1898 got 66,228 no votes and 71,595 yes votes. Queensland did not vote. South Australia got 17,320 no votes and 35,800 yes votes. Tasmania got 2,716 no votes and 11,797 yes votes. Victoria got 22,099 no votes and 100,520 yes votes. Western Australia did not vote. The total for no is 108,363 and yes got 219,712 votes.

    Votes were held in 4 colonieson June 1898. There were majority votes in all of them. It failed because the yes votes (80,000) had fell short in New South Wales.

    In 1899 New South Wales had 107,420 yes votes and 82,741 no votes. Quensland had 38,458 yes votes and 30,996 no votes. South Australia had 65,900 yes votes and 17,953 no votes. Tasmania had 13,437 yes votes and a very suprisingly low score of 791 no votes. And last but not least because Western Australia did not vote, Victoria. Victoria had 152,653 yes votes and again a low score of 9.805 no votes. the total for agree was 377,898 and disagree was 142,286.

    The process of federation was which six British self-governing colonies of New South Wales, Queensland, Western Austalia, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria formed a nation. They kept the systems of government that they developed as seperate colonies but also would have a federal government that's responsible for matters concerning the nation. When the constitution of Australia came to force on January 1st 1901, the colonies collectively became states of the Commonwealth of Australia.

    The only colonie that voted this year was Western Australia. Western Australia had 44,800 yes votes and 19,691 no votes. the total for agree was 44,800 and disagree was 19,691.
