    Battle of Gonzales
    By late 1835 tensions between Anglo Texans - called "Texians" - and Mexican officials in Texas. The Texians were becoming more and more rebellious, defying rules,Santa Anna smuggling goods into and out of the region and generally disrespecting Mexican authority every chance they could. Thus, Mexican Presidenthad given the order that the Texians be disarmed. Santa Anna's brother-in-law, General Martín Perfecto de Cos, was in Texas seeing that the order be carried out.
  • Consultation

    The Consultation reconvened November 4 in San Felipe and chose Branch T. Archer to preside. From the beginning, there was considerable discord among the members as to the best course to follow in its dealings with the Mexican government. As a result, three factions developed. Although Stephen Austin was away with the Texas forces at the time, a pro-Austin group led by Don Carlos Barrett favored a conciliatory approach to try to gain the support of Mexican liberals.
