After Santa Anna was elected dictator of Mexico, he strongly rejected any ideas of a civil war. When Stepehen F. Austin sent a letter saying that Texas should consider revolting, it was intercepted, and he was arrested.

The Texans were given a small cannon to defend themselves. When the Mexicans requested for them to return it, the rebels famously put up a flag saying, "come and take it." A battle started, marking the first battle of the Texas Revolution.
