In 1519 Hernan Cortes sailed from Cuba to the eastern coast of Mexico. After landing they learned of the powerful and wealthy Aztec empire led by Moctezuma 11. Cortes was considered an emissary of the feathered serpent God or the serpent God himself. On July 1st, 1520 Moctezuma was stoned to death by his own people.
