Technology at Home Timeline

  • TVs Are Available in Homes

As a child that was raised with a television in the home, I can't even begin to think about what life was like before each home had one. From learning my ABCs by watching Sesame Street to spending evenings with my mother watching The Gilmore Girls, TV is very deeply ingrained in my memories of childhood and continues to be a huge part of many people's lives today!
  • Push Button Phones Appear in Homes

In 1967, the first push-button telephones appear in homes. As a child born in the 1980s, I can't image a time where every home had a telephone! Now, when most people have given up their landline phones in favor of cell phones, it seems amazing to think that at one time, a phone with push-buttons was a new, "high-tech" piece of equipment!
  • The Sony Walkman Goes on Sale

The Sony Walkman Goes on Sale
From approximately 1988-1993, I truly believed that I could not live without my Walk Man! It was with me everywhere I went and I went through batteries faster than food! This is a truly historic event in modern technology because it was the start of "portable music" that most people take for granted today with the use of smart phones.

  • The Microwave Takes Off

I admit it. Without my microwave, I would probably starve. This piece of technology that I have never had to do without surely changed the face of cooking in the 1980s.
  • CDs Become Available in Stores

    CDs Become Available in Stores
In 1983, Compact Discs (CDs) first became available to purchase in stores. This was a huge event to me on a personal level because I have loved music since I was a small child. My first CD was a New Kids on the Block CD that I purchased in 1990.

  • The World Wide Web Takes Off

The World Wide Web Takes Off
Getting access to the internet (via dialup connection complete with that lovely noise) was one of the biggest technology occurrences to happen in my lifetime. I can still remember logging into AOL and looking for chatrooms where I could talk to other kids all around the world! Of course, I couldn't talk long because my father didn't want the phone to be busy if someone called!
