Proclamation of Neutrality
George Washington did not want us to get into alliances with other nations. When conflict broke out between France and Great Britain, he issued the Proclamation of Neutrality in order to keep us out of the middle of conflict between the warring nations. -
XYZ Affair
Adams wanted to defuse tensions between the US and France. He sent 2 American Diplomats to meet with French officals. The French sent 3 agents (X,Y,and Z) to demand money from Americans before the French officals would agree to meet with them. -
Convention of 1800
After the XYZ Affair, the relationship between the US and France was not a friendly one. The Convention of 1800 reestablished peace between the two nations. -
Louisiana Purchase
This purchase was made by President Jefferson. This purchase bought all the Louisiana Territory owned by Napoleon of France. This 15 Million Dollor purchase ended up doubling the size of the United States. -
Embargo Act
This act stopped the trade between the US to France and Great Britain. This act resulted in a disastor for the American economy. -
War of 1812
The British had began taking American Sailors off their ships forcing them into the British Navy. (This became known as Impressment". American leaders did not like this and wanted war.(These people became known as War Hawks). Many battles were fought between the US and Great Britain in the War of 1812. It lasted untin 1814. -
Treaty of Ghent
This treaty ended the War of 1812. The fighting was in the US, and resulted in the White House being burned down. The treaty ended the war without gains or loses for either side. It also won the respect and recognition for the United states to other nations becuase we were able to defend ourself. -
Monroe Doctrine
This doctrine stated that the US would not put up with European intervention, and that the Americas were no longer open to further colonization. Any attempts at colonization, would be viewed as an act of aggression. It basicly stated "Hands-off the western Hemisphere".
