In September 2017, JYP Entertainment officially announced the agency's new reality show to debut a new boy band. One of the news that drew attention to the program was that the trainees would not submit covers of other artist in their missions, but also create their own songs and choreography.

Before the show's premiere on October 6, JYP released the group's first video for the song "Hellevator" and it was later released as a digital single.

Along with the launch of the official Stray Kids website, JYP announced the release of a pre-debut EP titled Mixtape. It contains seven songs co-written and composed by the members, including "Hellevator" and other songs they performed during the show.

SKZOO are characters inspired by the members of the South Korean group Stray Kids. Their first appearance was on December 24, 2020, in a teaser video posted on the VLIVE channel and YouTube. On February 3, 2021, the SKZOO version of God's Menu came out, where the names of the characters were announced.
