    In 1543, Jacques Cartier claimed the territory for ther King of France,
    In 1604, Samuel De Champlain arrived and stayed.
    In 1760, Montreal came under British Control.
    In 1774, the Quebec Act restored French civil law, while maintaining Britsh criminal law and gauranteeing religious freedom for Roman Catholics.

    In 1763, Ottawa warrior, Pontiac, led a group of warriors and raided interiors trading posts in a desperate bid to hold back European expansion.
    1798 Colony of St. John's island renamed to Prince Edward Island.
    Both Canadas would have elected assemblies, an appointed Upper House or council and an executive, much like the British Commons, Lords and Cabinet.

    In the 1860's colonists in British North America became concerned that the United States would try to take over all of North America.
    1863 British Columbia expanded to present-day boudaries (excluding Vancouver Island)

    In 1871, British Columbia agreed to join Canada after the federal government promised a transcontinental railroad to make trade easier with the East
    In 1873. P.E.I became the 7th provinceof Confederation after the federal government promised to take over the debt of the buliding a railroad, give, PEI a cash subsidy and provide steamer service between the island and the mainland.
    1870 Ruperts Land and North-Western Territory are transferred to Canada.

    1873 Prime Minister MacDonald creates the North West Mounted Polce to act as law enforcement for the North- West Territories.
    1876- Intercontinental which joined Ontario and Quebec to the Maritimes was completed.
    1876 A new administrative region, the Distrcit of Keewatin is formed from part of the North-West Territories.

    1885- the Canadian Pacific Railway was completed.
    1893-the National Council of Women of Canada is formed to improve the conditions for female prisoners, women working in factories and female immagrants.
    1883 Manitoba-Ontario boundary dispute is settled.

    In 1896, Wilfred Kaurier was voted Prime Minister and came up with a solution to the Manitoba Schools Question, A compromise was established whereby different types of religious instruction would be allowed within the single system and French instruction would be available where there was significant demand.
    1897 Several district boudaries are slighty changed.
    1903 Canada loses the Alaska Boudary Dispute.

    Between 1901 and 1911, Canada's population increased from 5,373,315 to 7,206,643.
    1907- National Council of Women of Canada wanted 'equal pay for equal work'.
    1912 Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec exoand northward. The colony of Newfoundland disputes Quebecs eastern boundary.

    In 1918, 25 000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders were killed in the battle of Somme.
    1920, the League of Nations was formed with Canada as a member.
    1925 Canadian boudaries are extended to the North Pole.
    1977 Canada claims all offshore waters within 200 nautical mile (370 km) off the coast.

    1930's the Great Depression . 1935- 10% of Canadians were dependent on some form of financial relief.
    1939 World War Two was declared.
    1940 Unemployment Insurance was introduced.
    1945 war ended.
    1967 the Army, Navy and Air Force are united under the Canadian Armed Forces.

    On April 1, 1999, Canada added a new territory called Nunavut. It makes up about 1/5 of Canada with a population of approximately 27 000 roughly 85% are Inuit.
    Hans Island-an unpopulated isle roughly the size of a football field situated in the Kennedy Channel between Greenland and Ellesmere Island was recently the subject of dispute between Denmark and Canada.
    Petroleun reserves under the Beaufort Sea, located between Yukon and Alaska have also fueled the rivalry between Canada and the US.
