    British come to Ceylon

    The British conquered Kandy. Kandy was ruled by Sri Wickrama Rajasiha. He was a cruel king. Some of his nobles conspired with the British to get rid of him. The British army invaded. The king fled.

    The Sinhalese-Muslim Riots, otherwise known as the 1915 riots. The British Governor of Ceylon, Sir Robert Chalmers, came down with a heavy hand on the Sinhalese community. Many were killed.
  • Ceylon gains independence

    Ceylon gains independence

    Ceylon gained independence when their constitution went into effect in 1947. This constitution gave provided them with the freedom they had wanted. They have a House of Representatives and a Senate to vote and elect indirectly.

    Their government decided to change the name.

    Terrorists attack Sinhalese

    Terrorists killed almost 300 Sinhalese

    Tamil United Liberation party wins in Tamil areas although anti-Tamil riots began. These riots left more than 100 Tamils dead.
  • Black July

    Soldiers were killed in the LTTE attack while anti-Tamil riots began leading to the deaths of hundreds of Tamils.
  • Tsunami

    Tsunami

    More than 30,000 people are killed when a tsunami hit.
  • New President

    New President

    Mahinda Rajapaksa won presidential elections. Although Tamils in the areas that were controlled by the Tamil Tigers did not vote.
  • End of LTTE

    End of LTTE

    The Tamil Tigers were defeated after army forces conqured the last patch of rebel territory. The rebel's leader was killed in the fighting.
